How to Silence Notifications on iPhone

Every way to silence iPhone notifications — a quick Control Center toggle, Focus modes, turning off a single app, muting one conversation, and blocking unknown callers.

How to Silence Notifications on iPhone
Steps
Step Details
01 Swipe down from the top-right for a quick Do Not Disturb toggle Opens Control Center — tap the Focus button (crescent moon icon) to turn Do Not Disturb on immediately, silencing everything until you turn it off again.
02 Turn off notifications from one app entirely Go to Settings > Notifications, tap the app, and turn off Allow Notifications. This stops that app permanently, regardless of any Focus mode.
03 Set up a Focus mode to allow only what matters Go to Settings > Focus, choose or create a Focus, then tap Apps and People to pick exactly who and what can still notify you while everything else stays silent.
04 Mute a single conversation instead of a whole app In Messages, swipe left on a conversation (or long-press it) and tap Hide Alerts — that one thread goes quiet while the rest of your messages still notify you normally.
05 Silence calls from numbers you don't recognize Go to Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers and turn it on. Calls from numbers not in your contacts, recent calls, or Siri Suggestions go straight to voicemail without ringing.

Silencing your iPhone doesn't have to mean turning off every notification — there's a different tool for a quick break, a single noisy app, or one group chat.

Which method should you use?

You want to... Use How long does it last?
Go quiet right now, for a bit Control Center > Focus button Until you turn it off
Stop one app for good Settings > Notifications > [app] Until you turn it back on
Silence everything except a few people/apps Settings > Focus However long the Focus is active
Quiet just one conversation Hide Alerts in Messages Until you unmute it
Stop unknown numbers from ringing Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers Always on, until turned off

Quick silence with Control Center

Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Center, then tap the Focus button — it's the crescent moon icon. Tapping it turns on Do Not Disturb immediately, silencing calls and notifications until you tap it again to turn it off. This is the fastest option when you just need quiet for a few minutes and don't want to dig through Settings.

Turning off one app completely

If a single app is the actual problem, go to Settings > Notifications, tap that app, and turn off Allow Notifications. This stops it permanently — no time limit, no Focus mode required — and it won't come back on by itself.

Using Focus modes to allow only what matters

Go to Settings > Focus and choose an existing Focus (like Do Not Disturb, Personal, Sleep, or Work) or create a new one. Tap Apps to pick which apps can still notify you, and tap People to pick which contacts get through — everything else stays silent while that Focus is on. This is the right tool when you want most things quiet but still need a few specific apps or people to reach you.

Muting a single conversation

Notifications from one group chat don't have to mean turning off Messages entirely. Swipe left on the conversation (or long-press it) and tap Hide Alerts — that thread stops notifying you while every other conversation keeps working normally.

Blocking unknown callers

Spam calls and unfamiliar numbers can be silenced without touching notifications at all. Go to Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers and turn it on — calls from numbers not saved in your contacts, not in your recent calls, and not suggested by Siri go straight to voicemail instead of ringing.
